Building Regional Connections Across Washington

The Washington Passport Network is divided into six geographical regions across the state. These smaller groups allow for community-building, resource-sharing, and thought-partnership with colleagues working in closer geographic proximity than the entire state. Each region brings together a cross-disciplinary group of practitioners focused on increasing postsecondary opportunities and support for alumni of care and students experiencing homelessness.

This regional approach began in 2017 with the formation of a Regional Service Coordination Group in eastern Washington. This group was launched as a partnership with College Success Foundation, Eastern Washington University and the Washington Student Achievement Council with a goal of including the following characteristics:

Cross-disciplinary membership including:

  • partners from the K-12 education system
  • foster care and nonprofits focused on youth experiencing homelessness
  • government systems of care
  • apprenticeship organizations
  • postsecondary institutions

Focus on improving educational outcomes for students from foster care and those experiencing unaccompanied homelessness, especially as pertains to:

  • high school completion
  • direct enrollment in postsecondary education
  • postsecondary completion

Intentionally improving collaboration by:

  • Educating one another about respective priorities and services
  • Clarifying roles within the local continuum, resulting in more effective coordination and a reduction in duplicative efforts
  • Deepening professional relationships and forging common language and skill sets through engaging in coordinated professional development

After the successful pilot of the Eastern Washington Regional Service Coordination Group, CSF expanded the model across the state using the Department of Children, Youth and Families (DCYF) regional map (below) as a driving framework.
